Photo on left taken May 3, 2008, Ralph Ave. at Brown's inlet, east side. One on left may be common or European barberry,
one on right is Japanese barberry.
That photo was taken May 15, 2008 on Wilton Crescent, the other side of Brown's inlet.

European barberry has a triple spine at every leaf axil not that visible here. Japanese barberry has single spine, hanging
yellow flowers. Barberry is shown as having toothed and even fringed leaves but I don't find that here.
