GLEBE TREES AND SHRUBS
Green Ash (Fraxinus Pennsylvanica)
See Ash for more photos.
Full tree
March 19, 2009. Queen Elizabeth Drive path around Brown's inlet.
Note the S-shaped arching low branches which seem to me characteristic of ash.
Leaf scar and bud
March 19, 2009. Queen Elizabeth Drive path around Brown's inlet.
Note how the bud sits above the leaf scar, which is semicircular".
This differs from the "smiling face" scar with a notch of white ash.
Similar species
Red elderberry and elder: these also have opposite, compound leaves. They do not grow as tall as ash, and do not have
the diamond pattern on mature bark. Flowers are very different.
Mountain ash, butternut, black walnut, honey locust and sumac all have compound leaves but in an alternate pattern.
