The buds of white oak diverge from the twig, whereas those of bur oak hug it.
One bud is visible to the left, between the lobes of the leaf.
Notes
I would like confirmation that this is white oak. A constant feature is said to be
the small terminal lobe, which was present on all leaves I looked at.
